Flitton Family History Chapter 1
The following is a sketchy and draft outline put together by Bob Flitton in the mid 1990s.
THE FLITTON FAMILY
Flitton is a hamlet (small village) in the County of Bedfordshire, England having originated in approximately 1200 AD. The first names of Flitton family members appear on Flitton hamlet cemetery headstones in the 17th or 18th century. The first identified Flitton is Samuel Flitton, about whom little which is known except that there was a connection to the name Bassingborn in Cambridgeshire. It was a practice for English citizens to use the name of their community, example “I’m William of Flitton”, and hence the probable evolution of the Flitton name to the residents of the community.
